Radiation Oncology is one of only a few centers in the United States
that offer contact x-ray therapy. Contact x-ray therapy (also known as
endocavitary treatment or ECT) is a unique form of cancer treatment that
has been especially effective for selected rectal cancers, namely those
that are small and have not penetrated the rectal wall. The x-ray
treatment is delivered through a proctoscope, which is positioned directly
over the tumor.
Between 3 and 5 treatments are given at intervals of 2 to 3 weeks.
Close to 90% of properly selected patients will be cured by contact
radiation treatment. For those patients who may not be cured, surgical
resection may still be done, without compromise of outcome.
